SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – Messalonskee threatened to give the Marshwood High School football team its first deficit of the season on the opening drive on Friday night.
After squashing that notion by stopping Messalonskee’s nine-play drive at the Marshwood 8-yard line, the Hawks left no doubt once again.
Senior running back Brett Gerry ripped a 63-yard run on the ensuing drive to set up a 13-yard touchdown pass from Luc Blanchette to Ryan O’Neil to begin a 48-14 victory for Western Maine’s Marshwood over Eastern Maine’s Messalonskee in Class B action. The Hawks (5-0) have averaged 54 points a game, while allowing an average of nearly 10 points.
“We played hard, we’ve got a few mistakes we still have to clean up, but that’s football and we got to continue to stay focused,” Marshwood coach Alex Rotsko said. “I thought we ran the ball well and all of our backs ran hard.”
Gerry ran for 169 yards on 18 carries, which included a 2-yard scoring run which gave the Hawks a 14-0 lead entering the second quarter. Blanchette added 121 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while Jackson Howarth chipped in with 60 yards and two touchdowns.
“If Luc is not running the ball, Jackson is blocking for me and without them I wouldn’t have nearly as many touchdowns,” Gerry said. “I only had one touchdown today and it goes to shows that everyone on this team contributes and everyone can do it all.”
Messalonskee (2-3) closed to within 14-6 following a 37-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter by Jack Bematchez (19 carries, 117 yards).
Blanchette responded with a 51-yard scoring run down the sideline and after Zach Doyon intercepted Jake Dexter, Howarth ran in the end zone from 2 yards out to give the Hawks a 28-6 lead at halftime. Howarth added a 7-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
“It’s good with all of the running backs we have right now,” Howarth said. “We’ve got a good variety and if they key on somebody, we can mix it up.”
The Hawks extended their lead to 42-6 in the third following a 51-yard touchdown run by Blanchette and Justin Stacy scored Marshwood’s final touchdown on a 21-yard run in the fourth.
Messalonskee coach Brad Bishop was an assistant for Mount Blue when it beat Marshwood, 44-42, in the 2012 Class B championship game. Bishop knew that from that game that the Hawks would be the team to beat this year.
“They’re a very good team, well coached with a lot of depth,” Bishop said. “They had a young team (in 2012) and I kind of had a feeling that they’d be very good this year. They don’t do a lot, but they do it well and they’re all quick and they all play until the whistle blows.”
Marshwood caused four turnovers on the night and outgained the Eagles, 441-196.
“Some of the offense wasn’t executed well, but our backs make up for it because they run really hard and we have back that can shed tackles; that’s our strong point,” Marshwood lineman Nick Dalecki said. “Defensively, they got a couple on us, but that’s happens. We fixed our mistakes and we’ve just got to execute.”
Marshwood travels to Gorham next Friday, as the Rams dropped a 28-14 decision to Morse (3-2). The Hawks travel to Morse in two weeks before a showdown at home against York (5-0) in the regular-season finale.
