Elementary Schedule for 2015-2016

Elementary Schedule for 2015-2016

Dear Families,

You may have heard there will be a change in the schedule and school hours next year. We would like to take this opportunity to explain why this change has been made and the opportunity it presents for students and staff.

The administrative team worked for months to find a way to provide teachers with equitable common planning time without impacting student instructional time.  After many discussions, draft schedules, and a lot of creative thinking, we feel that we have developed a solution that achieves both goals.

It is critical that staff have common time to plan units of study that align with state standards.  It is also critical that teachers have common time to meet with colleagues to analyze data and to research and implement new strategies for helping students succeed. This is hefty work that is difficult to do well without sustained time to process information with colleagues.

Our solution was to make the school day slightly longer on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Fridays in order to have a shorter day on Thursdays for teachers to meet.  The best part of this schedule is that no instructional time was lost for students at any grade level.   In fact, both Morning and Afternoon session of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten actually gained 50 minutes of instructional time per week!  That results in an accumulation of over two weeks of additional instructional time per year!  Both Morning and Afternoon sessions are the same length of time.

A schedule for our school has been included on the back of this letter.

The first Early Release Thursday will be the second week of school, Sept. 10th, 2015. We will not have an Early Release the first week of school due to it being a short (3-day) week, and because of the staggered start for Pre-K students that week.  The first week of school (Sept. 1-3) will have regular school hours as posted on the accompanying schedule (8:20-3:20).

We worked hard to keep the changes to a minimum, and at all times we kept the impact on families foremost in our minds. There are still some details to work out, but we felt it was important to let you know early on so that you can start to plan accordingly. We understand that change is difficult and may present some challenges.  We appreciate your patience and support as we implement the new schedule.  Please feel free to contact the building principal if you have further questions.
