SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – Under a clear blue sky and with the stands full of parents, relatives and friends, 162 seniors graduated from Marshwood High School outside on the football field Friday evening. As seniors lined up in the school by advisory groups, history teacher Barbara Burnham said, “I don’t want to brag, but my advisory group is the best.” Advisers stay with their small group of students all four years of high school. “How many times have I cried?” asked Burnham of her students. “Four,” said one of her charges. “Ten,” said another.

Another history teacher, Michael Zamarchi, herded the seniors into order in the gymnasium, before the walk to the field. “The faculty will walk by first, then follow them in,” he said.

Elora Montgomery displayed a device, “Do you have your exit buddy?” on her mortar board, and her twin sister, Miranda, displayed, “Yes, I have my exit buddy,” on hers.

Principal Paul Mehlhorn welcomed all to the 52nd graduation of Marshwood High School. He said he had pondered what he would say, then said, “This class is different, it is like no other.”

He noted that they were born in the new millennium, into the digital age. In spite of the digital life, he said class members were highly independent in their thinking and supported independence and diversity.

“It may be the smallest class in a long time,” he said. “But it has the biggest heart.”

Salutatorian Nicholas Lillis congratulated his fellows, “We made it!” he said.

He compared life to his track career. “Since I started running,” he said, “I have dreamed of being a state medalist.”

He said he put on his uniform for his last race recently, but did not have enough for the race, and found himself on the ground. “Then I heard a voice, telling me to get up,” he said. “It was a track official shooing me off the course.”

Valedictorian Will Hausman told the crowd, “Our teachers have provided the foundation for our success.”He urged graduates to thank them and thank others who supported them.

“That includes voting Tuesday on the district school budget,” he said.

He told graduates to avoid labels. His example was a T-shirt given by Principal Mehlhorn to each graduate. Instead of displaying “Marshwood” or “Hawks,” it displayed the word “Culture.”

“Tread carefully around a label shackled by the chains of its assumptions,” Hausman said.

After the conferring of diplomas by MSAD 35 School Superintendent Dr. Mary Nash, the farewell was given by Skyler Amsden who said, “It is a mindset of acceptance we have created here.” And, “This is not a book with a final chapter” as she expressed her wish to meet with classmates through their careers. “I wish you the best of luck, and I can’t wait to see you.”
