News From Marshwood Great Works School
Janice Morro, Music Teacher
Pam Starkey, Grade 5 Teacher
As you know, when school closed on March 13th, tons of performances were canceled across the district, one of them being the annual GWS 5th grade musical. We were halfway through producing ”Annie, Kids”, and then it was canceled.
Pam Starkey and I have used a company called Beat by Beat Press for a couple of our more recent shows, and they announced they were writing a musical designed to be performed completely online. After talking with Principal Jerry Burnell and Superintendent John Caverly about producing it online, we went ahead and purchased the script and started producing a new musical, completely online!
We asked our original 45 cast members who would be interested in doing a new show, and 38 of them decided to do it! The online show has only 20 roles and this resulted in Pam and I creating TWO different casts. The kids met with Pam and I over the course of 2.5 weeks. We taught them music and acting over Google Meets. Then they filmed themselves performing their scenes and submitted them to us! Pam’s husband, Nik Starkey, knows a lot about film editing and he is helping us connect the videos to create an online musical!
We will be releasing the link to our cast and our entire GWS community on Friday, May 22nd at 10am. The musical is called “The Show Must Go Online!”. We could not be more proud of how dedicated and enthusiastic our 5th graders have been about starting a new show from scratch in the middle of quarantine! They have a lot to be proud of and we are excited to share their show with the Marshwood Community!
