Sports Shorts: Three Marshwood Graduates: Matt Brenner, Max McCoomb and Noah McDaniel, Make All-GNAC Baseball Team

Matt Brenner, who captained Suffolk to a third straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference title, is one of three former Marshwood High School standouts named to All-GNAC All-Star teams.

Brenner, a senior catcher from Eliot, Maine, sits among his team’s top three in every statistically category, hitting .344 (45-for-131) on the year to go along with nine doubles, four triples and a pair of home runs. He scored 35 runs on the season, while driving in a team-best 33.

Suffolk (25-13) will be in the NCAA Division III tournament, which begins next week.

Brenner played a key role in helping the Suffolk win its third straight GNAC playoff championship.

In Sunday’s 1-0 championship win over Johnson & Wales, Brenner scored the game-winning run. He led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a base hit.

To reach the final, Suffolk beat Lasell, 15-8, in the quarters and Johnson & Wales, 11-1, in the semis. Brenner, who was named to the all-tournament team, was 4 for 5 with five RBIs in the Lasell win, and 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs in the win in the semis.

St. Joseph’s senior shortstop Max McCoomb joined his former Marshwood teammate on the first team. The South Berwick, Maine, native batted. 467 (43-for-92) with 35 runs, nine doubles, three triples, a home run, 29 RBIs and four stolen bases despite missing 12 games due to an injury.

The four-year starting shortstop finishes his NCAA career with a .349 (178-for-510) batting average with 117 runs, 28 doubles, four triples, three homers, 69 RBIs and 23 stolen bases in 146 games.

Teammate Noah McDaniel was picked for the third team. The sophomore outfielder/infielder from Eliot, Maine, hit .383 (41-for-107) with 25 runs, five doubles, a homer, 24 RBIs and three stolen bases as a first-year starter for the Monks (31-8).
