SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — The Marshwood High School Class of 2020 concluded their senior week with a graduation drive-in diploma ceremony at the high school Friday night, June 5.

The ceremony was designed in accordance with CDC recommendations and Maine Department of Education guidance for graduation ceremonies while honoring the senior class’s request to “be together” for their graduation.Screen Shot 2020-06-07 at 4.46.30 PM Screen Shot 2020-06-07 at 4.46.42 PM Screen Shot 2020-06-07 at 4.46.56 PM Screen Shot 2020-06-07 at 4.47.14 PM

Each graduate and family arrived in a vehicle, weaved its way through campus adorned with flags and congratulatory signs before arriving at the staging area in front of the school. The graduate exited the vehicle, collected the diploma, posed on the stage for photographs before re-entering the vehicle and exiting campus.

The diploma ceremony culminated a senior week that included a virtual version of senior awards, convocation and senior slideshow. Each evening June 1-5, a video version of the traditional senior week event was provided for viewing. All graduation speeches were launched before the diploma ceremony. Families viewed the speeches and then arrived at the school for graduation.

The entire ceremony was live-streamed for community viewing and a video will be created of the event.

The ceremony was designed by a committee of students, teachers and administration. A survey revealed the following priorities: Safety, maintaining traditions and inspiring a sense of community.

Speakers during the ceremony included Principal Rob Scully, Matt Sanzone, who delivered the faculty address, salutatorian Katie Taran, valedictorian James Whitesell, and Alaina Smith, who delivered the farewell address.

“Every year during graduation our advice to the graduates is tempered by looking toward the future – a time when someday graduates will have to apply the skills they learned in high school to real world circumstances,” Scully said. “This year the world did not wait. It challenged these graduates to be accountable in a way no other class has ever been pushed. We are incredibly proud at how our students responded-with compassion, resilience, determination and creativity. Ironically, perhaps, this year’s authentic learning transcended what we many have been able to accomplish within the classroom walls.

“Our graduates will leave a legacy of grace under pressure and the importance of community.”

The event was called a true community effort that included Marshwood High School, South Berwick Police and Fire Departments, Project Graduation Committee parents and countless other agencies.
