S.T.E.A.M. brings Marshmallow Launch to MMS

STEAM picHow do you keep 600 students from going stir crazy when the calendar says spring, but the weather says winter? Have them build marshmallow-firing catapults and watch their energy levels soar.

In an effort to raise awareness and interest in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) careers, MMS is having all students design and build marshmallow launching catapults. Using the engineering design process, students are brainstorming ways to build their catapults and then using those ideas to construct, test and redesign their launchers.

The catapults are only one part of the STEAM activities. The second part is helping the students better understand what it means to be working in a STEAM career. Ranging in careers from an illustrator for the New England Journal of Medicine to solar energy design, over 20 community members volunteered to present to the students and share how they use STEAM skills in their work.
