Math Game: Rhythmic Patterns

Directions:

1. Teacher uses a percussion instrument or

claps to model a rhythmic pattern

2. Children copy the pattern by clapping and

then explain how many “claps” they heard

3. Vary the orientation and amount of claps,

but keep the number within 10. (Temporal

tracking beyond 10 is challenging even for

adults!)

Materials:

- Drum or other percussion instrument

(optional)

Scaffolding Suggestions:

- Start with clapping patterns within 3 or 5

for younger children

- For more of a challenge, turn it into an

additive task (i.e. clap 5 times on the left

and 2 times on the right, how many

claps?)

Thank You for All the Holiday Help!

The Central School community would like to thank everyone who provided holiday help this season! The gift card donations were very much appreciated! Working together with the Fire Department we were able to assist many families in one way or another. The families were so grateful! One family shared, “My heart grew three sizes last night” and “I am so grateful”. The community effort was tremendous! Hichen’s Farm Stand donated a tree to one family and the parent shared, ”Thank you on behalf of both of us for your kindness!” Many of the families asked that I share their thanks with all of you! Thank you again for taking the time to care about each other!

Happy New Year from Central School's art studio!

Please send your child to school with cereal or cracker boxes, broken down or not. This is usually lighter-weight cardboard and a bit easier for young artists to manipulate. Thanks so very much!
