Change of Times for Vaccination clinic May 18, 2021
We just heard from Northern Light Health of a slight change to the vaccination clinic times:
MHS will now be held from 8:30 - 10:00
MMS will now be held from 10:15 - 12:15
The dates of May 21st and June 11th have not changed.
Please note that you are welcome to bring your student to either clinic regardless of which school they attend as long as you have a consent form signed.
There is still time to sign up, see directions below.
Sign Up Instructions
Email Northern Light Health at HCHCovid@northernlight.org and put Marshwood Schools in the Subject Line. Put the number of children you need vaccinated in the body of the email.
This will generate a request that they send you sign up documentation.
The signup process can be done from your cell phone or computer.
You are encouraged to sign up at your earliest convenience, however Northern Light Health must receive your email by 8:00 a.m. on May 20. Once you receive the form, it should be completed and returned by 2:00 pm on May 20
You will receive an electronic consent form, which includes screening questions, and also a copy of the Pfizer information sheet ( a fact sheet on the vaccine for you to review). We will need you (parent/guardian only) to complete this form. If the registration form is not complete, your child will not be vaccinated. If you have insurance please complete that section (although the vaccine is free there are administration fees that insurance covers). As with flu vaccine, Northern Light will not turn away those without insurance. If you are unable to complete an online form for any reason, please contact Judy Doran RN judith.doran@rsu35.org to have a paper form sent home.

We have a couple of things to share with you on new mask and social distancing guidance, and an update on our planned COVID Vaccination Clinics coming up.
On new guidance:
You have probably heard about new masking and distancing guidelines from the CDC. There are some great signs there but also a bit of confusion. We are processing it now and what it may mean for us in the school settings but can offer up a few understandings:
Nothing has changed in the state of Maine yet. As of this morning we have not received any school specific guidance from Maine CDC or Maine DOE. This means that our mask and distancing practices are unchanged.
The planned changes that will happen in Maine on May 24 can be found in the Governor’s Moving Maine Forward
https://www.maine.gov/covid19/moving-maine-forward document.
The US CDC has released Interim Guidance for Fully Vaccinated People https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html. This guidance made big news two days ago. While it makes some great steps in the right direction it is important to understand that we need to follow the ME CDC and DOE guidelines and we have not received any new recommendations from them yet.
On COVID Vaccination Clinics for students ages 12 and up:
We are partnering with Northern Light Health to provide vaccinations to anybody who would like one on May 21 and June 11 at the following hours and locations:
MHS 8:00 - 10:30
MMS 11:00 - 1:30
We will be receiving instructions and a link for signing up next week and will forward the information to you.
If you would like to have your child receive a vaccination and you did not fill out the survey we sent out last Friday, May 7 please do so now. This is just for an estimate of required doses, it does not commit you to anything. If you don’t see that survey, please email Judy Doran RN with COVID VACCINE CLINIC in the subject line and let me know that you are interested.
Here are some FAQs from the survey:
We live in NH, will our child be able to be vaccinated at the MSAD35 Vaccination Clinics? YES
The Pfizer Vaccine is the only one with approval for administration for children ages 12 and up.
The clinic will be run by Northern Light Health who also provides us with Flu Clinics. The shot administrators are RNs. The post vaccination monitoring will be provided by District Nurses and several volunteer RNs.
If your child has fainted from a shot before, please plan to attend the clinic to support them or consider asking your pediatrician about other vaccination options.
CNN What parents need to know about vaccinating children ages 12 and older https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/11/health/questions-covid-vaccine-younger-teens-wellness/index.html
Other options for vaccinating your child are at pharmacies and their PCP offices. Vaccination sites in Maine https://www.maine.gov/covid19/vaccines/vaccination-sites details pharmacies offering vaccinations and how to sign up.
Are the side effects the same as what adults experience? Yes they seem to be.
It is important to remember that this vaccine has been fully tested and trialed for this age group. Was it fast? YES. Did the process cut red tape? YES. Did the process cut corners? NO.
Here is the CDC Director Statement on Pfizer’s Use of COVID-19 Vaccine in Adolescents Age 12 and Older https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2021/s0512-advisory-committee-signing.html which encourages you to speak with your child’s healthcare provider for questions regarding the vaccine.
Thank you, have a great weekend, and as always we will keep you posted.

Good Afternoon
Today, Friday, May 7, 2021, I am happy to notify the community that Governor Janet Mills working in collaboration with the Maine Department of Education and the Maine Center for Disease Control has updated the coding of York County to “Green”, when updating the State of Maine risk assessment color-coding system. This update removes the “closely monitor” status York County received two weeks ago when the coding was previously updated.
All schools will continue to provide in-person instruction, as outlined in our Reopening Plan. Each building will continue to follow their published schedule. The Maine Department of Education has scheduled the next update of the State of Maine risk assessment color-coding system for Friday, May 21, 2021. The State also reserves the right to update this coding when they deem necessary.
I am happy to announce an opportunity for children 12 and over to receive a COVID 19 vaccination in our district pending expected FDA approval early next week. This opportunity is being provided through our district nurses working in conjunction with Northern Light Health Services. For clarity, MSAD 35 is not requiring COVID vaccinations to attend school. There has been some confusion as there are currently a number of vaccinations required by Maine State Law in order to attend Public Schools in Maine, but the COVID 19 Vaccination is not one of those required. A survey will be sent out shortly from our District Nurses to families. It is our hope that this service will eliminate stress from families and provide an opportunity for all students.
In addition, Wednesday May 12th, 2021 MSAD 35 will be holding a Public Hearing regarding the 2021-2022 MSAD 35 District School Budget. Due to COVID 19 precautions, and in compliance with Maine State Law, the format of the meeting will be altered to allow virtual attendance. A link to the meeting will be made available on the MSAD 35 District Website early next week.
Thank you for your continued support of our students, staff and schools.
Please remember:
Let’s all fly like H.A.W.K.S.
H - Hands, wash them when you enter or leave a room.
A - Assess - Self Assess your health every day. If you are sick, stay home.
W - Wellness - Be aware of your mental and physical wellness.
K - Keep your masks on.
S - Social Distance
We are all in this together!!
As this pandemic continues to stress not only to us as individuals, but also as an entire country, we believe that is important to celebrate some of the wonderful things taking place in our schools. Hawks High Fives is an effort to share some of those wonderful things happening across the district. If you would like to share something about a volunteer, staff member or a student, please reach out to Mrs. Vicki Stewart (Vicki.stewart@rsu35.org).
A Hawks High Five to Mrs. Caverly, her student teacher, Ally, and their physical education classes for delivering every lunch bag for the second lunch every day. Each student carries at least one bag (and they can be heavy!) and quite often Mrs. Caverly and Ally do, as well! It sure does help us out and we really appreciate it!!
From Bonnie Dolph and the MMS Food Service Staff
A Hawks High Five to Central School Librarian, Lisa O'Brien. Not only does she help inspire our love for reading, but we are especially thankful for her work managing our hoop house garden. She is teaching the children about it during library classes and helping them to plant seeds so we can have fresh vegetables to enjoy. We appreciate your green thumb, Lisa!!!
From the Central School Staff!!
A Hawks High Five to the Marshwood girls’ varsity volleyball team. They should be celebrated for a fantastic undefeated wedge season with Coach Childs!
Have a wonderful weekend.

April 30, 2021
Good Afternoon,
I am writing today to help clarify some recent updates with regard to the management of the COVID -19 pandemic. The past week has brought many exciting changes, but those changes have raised a number of questions on how the District will manage the new recommendations.
It is first important to note that MSAD 35 will continue to follow the Maine Center for Disease Control, Maine Department of Human Services, Maine Principals Association, and Maine Department of Education recommendations. Safety will continue to be our top priority, and we will rely on the expert’s recommendations.
On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, a major change occurred regarding the wearing of masks while outdoors. Below, I have outlined what that means for MSAD 35.
1.Masks will not be required outside at MSAD 35 if 6-feet of social distancing can be maintained.
2.For after-school athletic activities, the Maine Principals Association has determined that masks do not need to be worn during athletic contests, but masks are recommended if 6 feet social distancing cannot be maintained (for example on the sidelines or in the dugout).
3.Masks must be worn during any indoor activity or in any indoor space. This would include gyms, locker rooms, auditoriums, buses, etc.
4.Masks must be worn at recess if the 6-foot social distancing cannot be maintained.
5.For physical education classes that are held outside where respiration is raised, 14 feet of physical distance must be kept between students.
6.Spectators or visitors to our campus will not be required to wear masks if they remain 6-feet apart.
One area that has created some confusion over the past week has been the management of contact tracing for outdoor activities. This has impacted a number of our families this week. The MSAD 35 District Nurses, the Athletic Director, and I have spent a great deal of time over the past week communicating with the Maine CDC, Maine Principals Association, and the Maine Department of Education to better understand and offer feedback on contact tracing.
Contact tracing for people outside stipulates that anyone who has been closer than 6 feet for a cumulative 15 minutes within a 24-hour period when resting or within 14 feet when respiration is elevated is considered a close contact regardless of mask use. In addition, the CDC has recommended that entire teams of athletes may be considered close contacts as the cumulative 15 minutes, 6 feet, and 14 feet distance is impossible to monitor. It is important to note that every time we have a positive COVID 19 test, we contact the Maine CDC Epidemiologist and they provide the quarantining and isolation recommendations for each situation.
I appreciate all of the support. I am thrilled that through the hard work of our community and increased vaccination rates restrictions are being reduced, but I do believe it is important for the community to understand the parameters of how and what we are trying to manage with these new guidelines. It is important for all of us to be mindful of those around us as we visit campus or watch an athletic contest. Please remember to keep the 6 feet social distancing requirement as school personnel does not want to be put in the position of monitoring or interpreting the 6 feet social distancing expectation.
I also wanted to notify the district of two confirmed COVID 19 cases in one of our district schools. Two individuals associated with Marshwood High School have tested positive for the COVID 19 virus. All school-related close contacts are in the process of being notified at this time.
I look forward to seeing many of you on our campuses over the next 6 weeks. Our schools are working hard to provide exciting opportunities for our students and opportunities to bring our remote students back to each of our buildings as we work to return to a sense of school normalcy in the fall.
In partnership,
John Caverly
