Art at the Early Bird Cafe

OUT IN THE COMMUNITY On a sunny Tuesday morning in May, Mrs. Stewart took a 2nd and 3rd-grade class of artists on a walking field trip to the Early Bird Cafe in South Berwick Maine. Owner Cara Maxfield and her daughter, artist

Julia was ready for us. We viewed the art on display; paintings, graphics, ceramics, and glass-blown pendants. We even learned a bit about each artist and saw photos of them. A few are scientists, and others lovers of cats, nature, and of course, coffee! One watercolor artist on display is Julia’s grandmother. Students did a great

job listening and asking thoughtful questions. Miss Julia led an abstract self-portrait lesson, where students were encouraged to use their artist's eyes and bright colors to create their own 5” x 5” self-portraits. The student work is now on display in the front window of the Early Bird Cafe. Central artists are proud of their work and we are incredibly grateful to our neighbors at The Early Bird. Thank you Cara and Julia for this experience. Please stop by and see their work.
