The 2nd graders at Central were recently treated to a visit from a local lobstering family. The Hoyts (Scott, his wife Charlene, and their son Mark) are a multi-generational family of lobstermen that live and work in the Kittery Point area. They generously donated some of their time to come speak to the 2nd grade class about lobsters, their lobstering business and equipment, and about how lobstering is an integral part of their family's traditions and identity. Students spent time over the previous weeks preparing for the visit by learning about lobsters and thinking about the question "Why are lobsters a symbol of Maine?". During the presentation, they were able to observe lobster traps & measuring equipment, to ask questions, and even to try their hand at banding the claws of live lobsters!
