International Day of Peace

Central School Celebrates the International Day of Peace

Wednesday, September 21, 2022

In today’s world, we need peace more than ever. On Wednesday, September 21st, Central School students will be celebrating the International Day of Peace by taking part in this International project.

During the first two weeks of school, during library, music, and art, Central students will be reading books and singing about peace as well as creating their own peace dove puppets. As part of the creation process, we will brainstorm what peace means to us and write our thoughts on paper. Each artist will color their peace dove puppet to visually express what peace means to them. Puppets will be assembled, and on the 21st of September, The International Day of Peace, students will walk in a parade and wave their doves out front in recognition of this special day.

International Day of Peace provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations, and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. In 2002, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared September 21 as that date. Our puppets for Peace art installation project is a way to help students make a public visual statement about their feelings about war, peace, bullying, tolerance, cooperation, harmony, and unity. This project is non-political.

To each of us, peace can take on a different meaning. For children it can be as simple and beautiful as a hug, a pet to cuddle, rainbows, or having a safe place to live. Our wish is that our peace doves will spread positive thoughts of peace throughout South Berwick, the surrounding towns, our country, and the world! :)
