The Into the Woods grant program began with the first of three sessions, and nearly all classes have participated in their fall session. This program was created by Christopher Morgan-Janes with the assistance of 5th-grade teacher Melody Morse and funded by the Marshwood Education Foundation and GWS’s Parent Teacher Organization.
During this first session, students met for three hours with the poet/artist/educator, who introduced his own haiku poems before students created their own poems. They also made colorful tree-ring prints for the poems to be printed on. Additionally, students learned about some forest-dwelling creatures, including Northern Flickers and tussock moths. Students will work with the poet again in the winter and spring.
