If you have ever walked into Great Works School you have gotten the privilege of getting to walk and talk with Mr. Burnell and experience the magic he has created within the halls here. You can stop and ask any student or staff member and each would have a funny story, sweet memory, or lesson learned from Mr. Burnell. For many years he brought magic to the halls at Great Works School, walking the halls to say good morning to staff, high five kids, sit in on a class to see what students are learning about, covering duties, jumping into a game of four square or soccer at recess or even handing out one of his famous ties to a student!
Mr. Burnell has spent 47 years in education and 31 years as a principal, He has been Marshwood Great Works School’s one and only principal since 1999 when this school opened. It is clear that he has made a lasting impact on the Marshwood community. His retirement is truly the end of an era here at Great Works School.

Over the years he has taught many students’ parents before teaching their children, creating generations of connections and memories. He has taught children not only how to learn, but how to care for one another. He showed teachers and families the power of kindness, patience, and community. There are thousands of people who will always remember how he celebrated their work, supported their dreams, and made them feel important. His kindness, humor, and dedication is what has made Great Works School the magical place it is!

Mr Burnell as you begin this well-earned retirement, may you remember the countless lives you lifted simply by being present, compassionate, and dependable. The hallways may grow quieter without your footsteps, but the lessons of generosity, leadership, and heart that you shared will echo for years to come. May your retirement be full of love, good health, new adventures, and plenty of reasons to sing and dance each day. You deserve to have it all!
