Great Works goes to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute

Fifth graders had an amazing field trip last week to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland, Maine. They learned about how climate change affects our oceans and the animals that live in it and how ecosystems work.

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute was founded in 1968, has come a long way over the years, and currently pioneers collaborative research to get fishermen and scientists working together. The GMRI decided to build a research lab on the Portland waterfront. The Gulf of Maine is now on the map for world-class ocean research and cutting-edge science education.

Some favorite activities were checking lobsters for v-notches and measuring them. Learning how the Gulf of Maine is changing due to climate change. How interesting it was to learn that Black Sea Bass are coming up into Maine and how lobsters are moving up into Canada. And the kids rode up to Portland in true rockstar fashion with the cool bus that picked them up from school!
