GMRI

Last week the Fifth graders had an amazing field trip to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland, Maine.

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute was founded in 1968. It has come a long way over the years and currently pioneers collaborative research to get fishermen and scientists working together. The GMRI decided to build a research lab on the Portland waterfront. The Gulf of Maine is now on the map for world-class ocean research and cutting-edge science education.

They learned about how climate change affects our oceans and the animals that live in it and how ecosystems work.

The students studied different types of plankton and learned about climate change and how black sea bass are affecting our lobsters. The black sea bass are moving North, because of the warming sea temperatures, and that in turn is affecting the lobster populations and therefore pushing them further North.

The students were able to do virtual dissections, used microscopes, and watched videos on Global warming.
