On Monday, May 15th, Mr. Justin Arnott, Science and Operations Officer at the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, met with Marshwood High School students to demonstrate how Probability and Statistics are used in different aspects of operational forecasting.  Students in Mrs. Crowley’s AP Statistics class learned about courses required for a meteorology degree, including Model Output Statistics, Forecast Products, Ensemble Forecasting, and Verification.  Justin helped the students understand that statistics play an important role in many aspects of the forecast process and that math is an essential skill set for an operational meteorologist.
