On April 29, 36 students from Marshwood High School competed in the local Trig-Star contest. Trig-Star is a competition sponsored by the National Society of Professional Land Surveyors to promote the surveying profession among high school students. Originally designed to operate only at local and state levels, it has since expanded to include a national competition and scholarship opportunities.
The contest challenges students to solve complex trigonometry problems involving triangles and other geometric shapes.
This year’s local winner was Marshwood sophomore William Gilbert, who earned a perfect score in under 40 minutes. As the local winner, William received a plaque and a cash prize. His score was then submitted to the state level, where he again had the highest score and best time in Maine.
As the state winner, William will receive an additional cash prize, have his name featured on the Trig-Star website, and earn the opportunity to compete in the National Trig-Star Contest.
Best of luck to William as he moves on to nationals!
