Unified Literacy Program at MHS

Librarian Jennifer Redimarker and Special Education Teacher Megan Murtha are teaming up this summer to create a new Unified Literacy Program for Marshwood High School.

Like Unified Basketball, the Unified Literacy Program will use student mentors to help Special Education students, but this time the goal will be to improve academic skills. Ms. Redimarker and Ms. Murtha are modeling the program of off a very successful initiative they observed at Morse High School in Bath, Maine earlier this year. The relationships built between students created positive outcomes for all and the ripple effects lasted well beyond the classroom and the students' time at high school. You can learn more about the Morse High School program here.

The program at MHS will be piloted during the second semester of the 2025-2026 school year and will incorporate themes of technology and nature, hands on projects, community outings and showcases of student work open to the public. Students interested in becoming mentors can contact their school counselors or email Ms. Murtha directly at megan.murtha@rsu.35.org.
