Hawks Crown State Champions in Girls Javelin and Boys 4 x 400 relay (out of the slow section...lol)
What a crazy, amazing, and totally perfect way to end the 2021 outdoor track season. The Hawks brought their A-game to the state meet, and, despite the heat (and some nagging injuries), made a very clear statement about the toughness and resilience of Marshwood’s track athletes. There were so many storylines that played out on Saturday…
A pair of sisters with the last name Anderson, both making the medal stand? Check!
Kelvin’s best long jump performance of his career at his final state meet? Check!
Rori taping up her ankle for one last chance at a 4x1 podium with her teammates - Ella, Cici, and Carmie? Check!
Zach running two legendary relay legs to help the Hawks earn bronze and then gold? Check!
For context, in the boys 4x100 fast section, after the starting pistol was fired a second gun was fired by the umpire. Typically this would indicate a false start and the field would be recalled. However, all but one team kept running, including Zach, who, in lane 2, had the awareness to keep running when the rest of the field in lanes 3-8 kept running as well. His efforts helped the Hawks to a bronze medal in the 4x1 and then in the 4x4, Zach dropped the hammer over the last 225 meters to open a gap on the field and put Marshwood in the driver’s seat with two legs to go...the rest, as they say, is history.
Catie grinding out a 7th place finish in the 3200, despite brutal heat conditions? Check! (and PRing in the 1600 with a 5th place effort? Check!)
Rowan, finishing the day with 4 state meet medals, (1st, 3rd, 5th, 5th) and a school-record? Check!
Cici running to a PR in the 100 in both trials and finals to earn a state meet medal? Check!
Sierra jumping to tie the school record in the pole vault (after nearly missing the state meet?) Check!
The girls 4x8 team, seeded 9th, running to a 5th place, medalist finish? Check!
