**Civil Rights Team:

The Civil Rights team at MMS works hard to help all students feel welcome, safe and respected in our school. The team includes students and two adult advisors. The team meets on a regular basis and works on projects that engage the school community in thinking and talking about issues related to:

β€’ race and skin color

β€’ national origin and ancestry

β€’ religion

β€’ disabilities

β€’ gender (including gender identity and expression)

β€’ sexual orientation

These are known as civil rights issues, and it’s important that we think and talk about them so that all students feel safe, welcome, and respected for who they are. The civil rights team at MMS is one of many here in Maine, The CRTP is run out of the Maine Office of the Attorney General and supports the work of student civil rights teams in more than 175 elementary, middle-level, and high schools across the state.

Our meeting dates will be determined after our first meeting on Wednesday, September 13th right after school. This meeting will be on Google Meet and a link will be sent. Please reach out to Mrs. Caverly at Renee.Caverly@rsu35.org or Mrs. Williams at Katie.Williams@rsu35.org with any questions.

**We The People

β€œWe The People” is an organization focusing on the United States Constitution, government, and current events. The first half of the year will be spent navigating the six-unit, thirty-lesson curriculum and learning about the Constitution, its ideas, and where these ideas came from. In the second half of the year, students will prepare to compete in the *We The People National Invitational, a virtual competition sponsored by the Center for Civic Education.

*Last year, the National Invitational was held over April vacation. In the instance of such a conflict, a simulated hearing will be put on for members and their families. The Center for Civic Education typically releases this date by early December.

The program…

…is free of charge;

…includes a field trip to the Maine State Legislature in Augusta;

…meets in Room 225 with Mr. Rowe every Thursday from 2:45 until 3:45.

…begins October 12 and ends in early May, specific date TBD (One week after the Center for Civic Education determines the dates for the National Invitational)

**STUDENT COUNCIL

Students who join the Student Council become representatives for the entire school.

Representatives bring their own ideas and those from their peers to the table and Student Council works to put those ideas into action.

Meetings are twice a month or more depending on activities that are being planned.
