Dates to Remember

April 9, 2026

Dear Marshwood Community:

I think spring has finally arrived! Even with snowflakes swirling earlier this week, there’s something about hearing the peepers at night that brings a renewed sense of optimism. Across the District, that energy is everywhere - lacrosse balls are flying, preparations for the spring play are in full swing, and our seniors are beginning to solidify their post-graduation plans. Central School is gearing up for its annual Hike Through History, while Eliot Elementary is excited to debut its new Trolley Back in Time experience this May.

Amid all of this activity, I’d like to take a few moments to share several important updates with you.

Last Day of School

The end of the school year will be here before we know it. I’m pleased to share that our waiver request to the Department of Education has been approved, and we now have a confirmed plan for the final days of school.

The last day of school for all RSU 35 schools will be a half day on Thursday, June 18th

This year, we had five snow days. Four of those days have been added to the end of the school calendar. The fifth day will be made up by reclaiming instructional time on our previously scheduled late start/early release Thursdays. As a result, the final late start/early release day will be May 21, 2026, and the remaining Thursdays (May 28, June 4, June 11) will be full school days.

Superintendent Update

It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve the communities of Eliot, South Berwick, and Rollinsford as your Interim Superintendent this past year.  I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me by the RSU 35 School Board and our dedicated staff. We are fortunate to be part of such a supportive and vibrant community.

After thoughtful consideration, I decided not to apply for the permanent Superintendent position. While I have valued the experience and challenges of this role, I am eager to return to my previous position - one that allows me to work more closely with teaching and learning. Supporting the incredible work happening in our classrooms each day is where my passion truly lies.

That said, I am thrilled to announce our new Superintendent, Dr. Caroline Arakelian:

Dr. Caroline Arakelian is excited to join RSU 35 as the next Superintendent of Schools. Most recently, she has served as Superintendent of Schools for the Governor Wentworth Regional School District in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. She brings more than 20 years of experience in public education, having served in multi-town school districts as a teacher, building and district-level administrator, assistant superintendent, and superintendent.

Throughout her career, Dr. Arakelian has worked in school districts across both the Lakes Region and Seacoast areas of New Hampshire, gaining valuable experience serving diverse student populations and communities. Her professional background includes leadership in special education, strategic planning, and budget development.

Dr. Arakelian earned her Doctorate of Philosophy in Educational Leadership from the University of New Hampshire, her Master’s in Education from Rivier University, and her undergraduate degree in psychology from Johnson State College. She is committed to collaborative leadership, strong community partnerships, and ensuring high-quality educational opportunities for all students. She is eager to meet the communities of South Berwick, Eliot, and Rollinsford.

Dr. Arakelian will be hosting an informal “Meet the New Superintendent” event on Monday, May 11, 2026, from 6:00 pm-6:45 pm in the Marshwood High School Library. I encourage you to stop by and say hello on your way to the District Budget Meeting!

Budget Update

Our District Budget Meeting is quickly approaching. Please join us on Monday, May 11, at 7:00 pm in the Marshwood High School gymnasium.  Your participation is important and valued.

The District Budget Validation Referendum vote will take place on June 9:

  • Eliot Voters: Eliot Town Hall Polls open: 8 am - 8 pm

  • South Berwick Voters: Marshwood High School Polls open: 8 am - 8 pm

A full set of budget materials is available on the District website, along with a recorded version of the March 11 budget presentation

Safety and Security

The safety and security of our students remains our highest priority. Recent events have prompted us to reflect on and strengthen our practices, and we are continuously looking for ways to improve.

We have recently installed large monitoring screens in the main offices of each school (see example below), allowing staff to better observe entry points in real time. Additionally, Central School is piloting door alert monitors that notify key staff if an exterior door is opened during the school day. These enhancements are important steps forward, and we also value your continued partnership in reinforcing safe behaviors with students both at home and at school.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our students, staff, and schools. It is a privilege to serve this community.

Sincerely,

Heidi Early-Hersey

Interim Superintendent of Schools, RSU 35
