Last Tuesday, Mrs. Lontine took a group of interested students on a field trip to the Shipyard. The students were all engaged, and asked some really great questions while on the trip!
The students were able to tour:
Shipwrights: (in charge of constructing the wood & scaffolding for when a sub is dry docked. Focus there was on the precision required (sometimes, down to 1/8"!) and that "newer" doesn't always mean "better ".
Lifting/Handling: Got to hear from one of the instructional leaders who talked about the value of learning, understanding, and being better... as tiny errors can lead to huge repercussions.
Transducers: Observed the GIANT (1 million gallon!) tank being held together with plywood, and sonar technology's impact on the work being done on multiple levels.
They also went on a driving tour around the entire base, during which time they engage in some great conversations about discovering your career pathway and understanding "benefits" and their relevance as these students approach adulthood/adult decision making.
They also encountered at least 4 different individuals on the tours that identified themselves as Marshwood graduates, which was cool to hear- as they each spoke briefly about the path they took from MHS to PNSY, offering the advice they'd give to their high school selves.

Freshman Seminar is a class designed to help support students with the acclimation into high school. We are focusing on SEL skills as well as providing opportunities for students to meet school staff they might not interact with on a regular basis, hear from upperclassmen about what helped them get through challenging times, and to work on core student skills (like studying and note taking).
So far, we have been doing a lot of work with team building and communication within the classroom. Moving forward we are going to focus on goal setting and self-management.
Families can keep an ear out for communications from their own students about work they are doing inside Freshman Seminar as well as from Mr. McKone.

Marshwood took on Kennebunk during their Senior Night. It was a nice environment and a hard fought match. Kennebunk had some terrific servers to overcome the scrappy defensive play of the Hawks. Senior Mady Denault led the team in digs. Junior Captain Averi Dudley led the team in assists and aces. Junior Captain Sivan Semo led in blocks. Seniors Katie Sanborn, Captain Kate England, Captain Katelyn Friberg and Ayla O'Leary led their team proudly to end in their final season at Marshwood. I had them as freshman and got to watch them grow into young women. The connection they have to our volleyball program will not be forgotten.

10 surprise standout players for Seacoast high school volleyball. Who's on the list?

Brynn Folger, Marshwood High School, sophomore, setter
Folger is in her second season with the Marshwood varsity, and head coach Robert Childs calls his starting setter a "smart, funny, and charismatic" player.
"She's a sponge, she lives for volleyball and invests everything she has into it," Childs said. "She has accepted (setting) role and has accepted responsibility for all of her teammates successes and failures. It is a lot to ask a 15-year-old kid, but she wants it
Despite being only a sophomore, Childs hold Fowler to a the highest accountability, including that of his captains.
"Every game is a season highlight on how to accept tough coaching for the growth of her and her teammates," Childs said. "She is strong, she is focused and determined to be the best version of herself not for her personally but so her teammates can excel and reach their potential."
Childs says Folger is built differently than most.
"No matter if it is volleyball in college or a career, she is going to find success in anything she does," Childs said.
Kylie Folger, Marshwood High School, sophomore, defensive specialist
Folger was given a choice at the end of Marshwood's three-day tryout - start at the junior varsity level, or be a role player at varsity unless her improvement was drastic.
"We had a candid conversation with Kylie that because of her attitude and effort she has earned the opportunity to make the choice but would have to own it fully," Marshwood head coach Robert Childs said. "Kylie chose to be a varsity player because she desired fair and tough coaching to improve. Not only did Kylie own that decision, she has been a model for the program in effort, attitude and off-the-court work ethic."
There was a match this season where Folger chased a ball off the court, and crashed along the bleaches, just one example of her hustle and determination to do what she can to help her team win each point.
"She is team first, individual second," Childs said. "Those characteristics have guided her to be better player and a varsity starter in very little time. She puts her body on the line every single play and is one of the first girls to provide passion and empathy for her teammates in the truest form."

From Coach Childs
Marshwood and T.A proved to be a close match up. The Hawks came out to secure the first set win but couldn't capitalize to finish out the night with a win. TA wins 3-1. Sophomore Kylie Folger led in team digs(7). Junior Captain Sivan Semo led in blocks(3) and kills(9). Junior Captain Averi Dudley led in assists with 13.
