The Civil Rights Team here at MMS is building a culture of inclusivity. On Tuesday, the members of the Civil Rights Team held a kick off event with the "Day of Welcome."  At the December staff meeting, Lucinda Cox and Annabelle Getchell addressed the teachers with the goals for the next school wide activity "to be inclusive of all cultural and familial traditions." In Advisory this morning students were given the opportunity to fill out an anonymous Google Form asking questions about cultural traditions and giving students the chance to share those traditions through pictures and artifacts.In the message sent to students the Civil Rights Team says "We would love to hear about ALL of your cultural and familial celebrations, not just the ones celebrated at this time of year. It is our hope to have the lobby reflect the celebrations of our students and their families all year long." The students and staff are looking forward to seeing the display case in the lobby filled with mementos connected to them. Be sure to keep checking back to see how the display case is filling up.

On Tuesday, December 7, Marshwood Middle School Civil Rights promoted a 'Day of Welcome' to celebrate and promote the idea that school communities are for everyone and all the parts of their identities are protected under the Maine Civil Rights Act: race and skin color, national origin and ancestry, religion, disabilities, gender (including gender identity and expression), and sexual orientation. Posters were displayed throughout the school and students dressed in bright colors to highlight diversity and acceptance. CRT advisors are Renee Caverly and Katelyn Williams.

World’s Most Awesome Invertebrate Project! Last week students on the 7 White team to select the world's most awesome invertebrate. Students practiced using scientific vocabulary and their research skills to learn about a unique, interesting creature that was unknown to them.

November 2, 2021 Vaccine Update For 5-11 Year Olds: On October 29, the FDA authorized the Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine for children ages 5-11. Nov 2, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet to vote on recommendations for use of the vaccines. Following the Nov 2 meeting, the Director of the CDC will sign off on those recommendations and children in this age group will be able to start receiving vaccinations. The Pfizer vaccine for this age group is a lower dose than the one approved for people aged 12 and older and is also given as a two dose series given three weeks apart. A key part of the plan for vaccinating kids is getting vaccines into places that parents already take their children to for health care: pediatricians and family doctors, children's hospitals and neighborhood pharmacies. There will also be pop-up and mobile clinics and eventually school-based clinics. We have COVID-19 Vaccination clinics scheduled with Northern Light Health on the following days. Because of the lower dosage the only people who will be able to receive vaccines at these clinics are the 5-11 year olds. We also encourage you to get a flu vaccine for all family members 6 months of age and older. We are so fortunate for the past 8 years to have Dave McLean volunteer his talents and time to Marshwood's Middle School Veteran's Day Celebration. Mr. McLean is a retired firefighter who lives in Rochester and teaches Fire Science at Southern Maine Community College.

Click Clack the Rattle Bag Today Ms. Gray and Ms. Corriveau teamed up to deliver the spooky Neil Gaiman story Click Clack the Rattle Bag. For this story students made their way to the library where Ms. Gray had students use evidence from the text to show the mood Gaiman created in the story. Next Ms. Corriveau pushed the students' visualization to the next level by creating a Rattle Bag for students to investigate. The MMS 7th grade girls soccer team was coached by Casey Richards. The Girls refined their skills of passing, kicking and overall conditioning.

8th grade Boys Soccer,coached by Bobby Pratt, focused on conditioning and footwork during practices. The boys had a great season and played teams from the entire southern Maine region

The 8th grade girls soccer team had a very successful season! The team participated in drills, conditioning and cardio training during practices. All their hard work paid off during game time!. The team was coached by Alex Foote.

Our MMS Cross Country Team had an amazing season with our boys and girls consistently placing in the Top Seven in every meet. Henri Ruvard and Maya Sanzone were our athletes that won every meet in their division. All athletes worked hard and displayed tremendous sportsmanship throughout the season. The team was coached by Barbara Mundell and Cathy Locke.

The Seventh Grade Boys Soccer team has concluded with improved skills in footwork and running the field. The boys had a great season with coach Ryan Camire.

As Fall Sports conclude the 2021 season, Marshwood Middle School's Field Hockey Team( coached by Danielle Durgin, scores high with a great work ethic and positive attitude.

"Marshwood Middle School - Art Club - Spreads Positivity!" Art Club Advisor: Mrs. Jen Balsiger 25 students at MMS joined the art club earlier this year and our first project was inspired by the American artist, Jen Stark who is known for her drip paintings. Students put a positive spin on this art installation in the halls of our school as a simple reminder that a little bit of kindness goes a long way! Art club is a great way for students to stay inspired, unwind, use their imagination, and create meaningful relationships.

After a long awaited return to their science labs, students on the 8 White team put their scientific skills to the test with the Color Magic Measuring Lab. Students are asked to demonstrate their lab safety procedures and knowledge of the metric system to make the colors of the rainbow.
