Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is hosting a career expo on Monday and Tuesday May 2 & 3 at The Point in South Portland, Maine. This event will consist of representatives from nearly all our production trades (machinist, painter, pipefitter, electrician, welder, and MANY more), material handlers, IT, and non-destructive testing. Visitors will be able to talk to as many trades as they wish, learning about Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the work we do. There will also be informational sessions about our trades apprenticeship program, the fully paid entry level training program that combines academics, classroom training, job shadowing, and hands-on learning to graduate journey-level workers upon completion of the four-year program. Those prepared with multiple copies of their detailed resume may be able to interview for positions that same day, with the potential for contingent job offers that day as well. This event is open to the public, and high school students are welcome to attend to learn more about the career opportunities and benefits available at PNS.

On Friday Ms. Nelson took a group of seven Marshwood students to Waterville, Maine. They competed in the Thomas Cup at Thomas College. Each team was made of 5 students, we hosted a team plus 2/5ths of an additional team. The teams competed all night in challenges. The challenges were a challenge, CSI, Cybersecurity, Robotics, ESports, and the Innovation Challenge. (The innovation challenge centered around paper rocket-building and launching.) Our full Marshwood Team (SCM) did admirably. They solved the robotics challenge with one line of code. For the innovation challenge, they launched their paper rocket and got it stuck near the ceiling (talk about a long shot). (Team members- Zoie L, Jackie L, Zach L, Brandon L, Taylor W) The 2/5th team was with two additional schools. They called themselves 'Windwood', they earned second place in the competition. Zach F distinguished himself in robotics and cybersecurity. Kevin F carried the team with his CSI investigative skills, not to mention his rocket-building skills. Everyone on this team earned a scholarship to Thomas College.
